Some Twenty-eight Years Ago

“On some fond breast the parting soul relies,
Some pious drops the closing eye requires;
Ev’n from the tomb the voice of Nature cries,
Ev’n in our Ashes live their wonted Fires.”

– fr. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, Thomas Gray

SOME TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO
(in memory of Ric C., high school classmate)

how are you Ric, in the Great Beyond?
we the Stags miss you here in this land
we never thought ahead you would go
some twenty-eight years ago.

you had left too early to have seen
our pals and gals with whom you had been
your friends in mischief as it was so
some twenty-eight years ago.

life’s been different since you were gone
you would have seen, all that we have done
the things we never thought we would do
some twenty-eight years ago.

in reunions we feel your absence
“joy” to us would have been your presence
then we’d reminisce what we did so
some twenty-eight years ago.

one day sure we will meet you again
in the Great Beyond; but until then
we will remember our friendship so
some twenty-eight years ago.
