Sun Rising

“In my old home
which I forsook, the cherries
are in bloom.
– Kobayashi Issa (1762 -1826)

(Japan, January – March 1995)

shinkansen speeding
mt. Fuji snowing
cherry blossoms budding
people hurrying
skyscrapers standing
temples ageing
subways crowding
earth shaking
pachinko lights blinking
professors lecturing
robots working
faces smiling
sun rising

(images in mind so vivid
in the Land of the Rising Sun
memories indeed so lucid
of my fine sojourn in Japan.)

– between
sun-rising and sun-setting
is miracle.

– between
sunrise and sunset
is spectacle.
