Lighthouse

“I paused;
Perhaps I darkened, as the lighthouse will
That turns upon the sea. ‘It’s always so…’”

– fr. Aurora Leigh, Elizabeth Barrett Browning

LIGHTHOUSE

beam of light
slowly spinning incessantly

cutting the pitch blackness
of the night’s obscured horizon

seeming to flash in a moment
as it sweeps across the eyes…

oh, beacon light guiding mariners
you save more souls in the raging sea
than erring pastors do in promise land.

(between
tragedy and safety
is light.

between
flock and flak
is pastor.

between
light and pastor
is guide.)

– lighthouse
is between
seaman and layman.
