Lace of a Leaf

“The web of our life is of a mingled yarn,
good and ill together.”

– William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616)
English poet and playwright

LACE OF A LEAF
(Meditation on a Fossilized Leaf)

i stared at the lace of a leaf
and got lost in its maze:
infinite web of arteries unique.

what Destiny sculpts
such intricate lace in place,
a flimsy labyrinth

in a leaf?

(life is a leaf; a labyrinth —

a maze of
highways and byways
to travel;

a web of
qualms and quandaries
to hurdle;

a mesh of
dreams and whims
to handle.)

– between highways and byways we cut corners.
– between qualms and quandaries we cross fingers.
– between dreams and whims we chase ringers.
