Reclusion Perpetua

(Are we convicts in cosmic scheme?
What are we in the universe’s theme?)

we are wine innate —
inmates in oak barrels,
in rows tiered-parallels;
ageing in complacent berth
in a stale cellar called Earth,
while interstellar cataclysm*
goes on in the galactic chasm.

we are released from our oaken cells
when we have served our term
(aged to the mellowed state),
only to be detained again
in bottles, then consumed

for the Connoisseur’s
last and final judgment!

– wine
is between
heaven and hell.

(c) 2006 Chito Aguilar
* “The entire observable universe consists of 100 billion galaxies, each stuffed with 100 billion stars, stretching out more than 10 billion light-years in all directions. The universe as we know it, is but a small cross-section of a much grander universe whose true magnitude is hidden in dimensions we cannot perceive. The Big Bang is theorized as the result of a collision between our three-dimensional world and another three-dimensional world less than the width of a proton away from ours — right next to us, and yet, displaced in a way that renders it invisible. Moreover, the Big Bang is just the latest in a cycle of cosmic collisions stretching infinitely into the past and into the future. Each collision creates the universe anew. The 13.7-billion-year history of our cosmos is just a moment in this endless expanse of time.”

– Before the Big Bang, Michael D. Lemonick
