First and Last

“…and the last shall be first.”

– fr. The Bible, St. Matthew, Ch.19, verse 30

there is always a first –
the first flush of flowers in spring
the first brush of sunrays each morning
the first blush for the first crush
and the first kiss of sweetest bliss (hush!).

and yet,

the first
may be the last –
as the first yawn of dawn
is the last sigh of night.

the first rush of glee
is the last gush of pain
at the moment of birth.

and, the first
(and only) time we die
is when we breathe
our last breath.

– between
first and last
is breadth.

– between
life and death
is breath.
