Separate Ways

“Try to remember the kind of September
When life was young and oh, so mellow…
When grass was green and grain was yellow…
When you were a tender and callow fellow…
And no one wept except the willow…
Try to remember and if you remember
Then follow.”

– fr. lyrics of  Try to Remember, The Lettermen

SEPARATE WAYS

tonight, our paths separated.
gone now, covert love we started.
the amber ember in September dies
in silent conspiracy with black skies.

a dozen years of cheers and tears –
and now, half-dozen frozen beers
and pilsen peers for company;
i blight by flight of Ebony.

on impaled impasse now I pause
as another chapter I close

in the first king’s Book of Flings.

(between
cheer and tear
is beer.

between
peer and dear
is beer.)

– beer is between beer and beer.
