The Crowd

THE CROWD
(Tokyo, Japan, January 1995)

((( the clock crowed
and the cocky crowd
hastens anew, never cowed )))

by the hustle and bustle of another day’s call

((( a host of keepers
trippers and sleepers
rippers and reapers )))

they rush like robots, everyone and all

((( they fill train like a rain of bees
queue on cue in kiosk like famished ants
seek temples in whittles like little beetles )))

then, upon the day’s end, by nightfall

((( they disperse to hamlets and homes
or to cafes and cocktails again
[scurrying like water circles rippling
away from the sinking pebble]
in hurried and harried flurry )))

escape from the center of it all.

– between usual and habitual is routine*.

* As Agent Smith was chatting with Morpheus in his office, Agent Smith was standing at the window looking down at humanity and he said, “Have you ever stood and stared at it? Marvel at its beauty, its genius? Billions of people just living out their lives, oblivious.  Did you know that the first matrix was designed to be a perfect human world, where none suffered, where everyone was happy.   There was a disaster, no one would accept the program, entire crops were lost.”
