A Tale

“Do you know what he’s talking about?”
“I haven’t the least idea.”

– Conversation recounted by C. P. Snow
in The Cultures and the Scientific Revolution

A TALE
(Everyone has one to tell.)

the cat and the catfish flew
a deer cooked deer-hunter stew
the dog in the doghouse swam
and a bat made Batman scram

the butterfly cannot fly
a dragon is dragonfly
since the housefly is a house
then the mousetrap is a mouse

a horseradish makes radish
the dishwasher is a dish
there’s no drug in a drugstore
no never in nevermore

now, a crow ate the scarecrow
and the brow cropped the eyebrow.
(do you think this tale is true?
then, liar, tell no lies too!)

– between
difference and diffidence
is a lie.

– between
ambiguity and certainty
is the truth.
